CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The women's squash team suffered a 9-0 loss to second-ranked Yale on Friday afternoon in a first-round match at the Howe Cup, which is the College Squash Association's national team championships.
Despite the lopsided score, only three of the nine matches were decided in three games. Both Jesse Pacheco (No. 3) and
Laura Caty (No. 9) led their respective matches before falling in five games. The seventh-seeded Big Red has defeated the Bulldogs just once in its program history.
Cornell (11-7) resumes play at 4 p.m. Saturday with a big match against rival Stanford in the consolation semifinals. A victory over the sixth-seeded Cardinal would guarantee the Big Red would improve its national standing after finishing seventh in each of the last two seasons. Stanford took the teams' lone meeting this meeting, 7-2, during November's Williams Round Robin.
The Big Red will then play either fourth-seeded Penn or eighth-seeded Dartmouth on Sunday.
