CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The Cornell women's polo team dropped a 21-5 contest to top-ranked Virginia on Saturday evening. After a solid first chukker, the Cavaliers were able to pull away for the victory, dropping the Big Red to 8-5 on the season.

After finding itself tied 2-2 midway through the first chukker, Virginia started to take over. The Cavaliers embarked on a 6-0 run to end the first with an 8-2 lead. Cornell had opportunities to score but could not find the goal. That trend continued in the second as UVa built a 12-2 halftime lead. The Big Red found its stride in the third and tied the Cavaliers 3-3 for the chukker, but still trailed 15-5 heading into the fourth. In the beginning of the fourth, UVa quickly took advantage of a horse mismatch up at one in the throw-in before the Big Red figured out how to adjust and stopped the bleeding. Though Cornell shut them out for the rest of the chukker, the damage was done as Virginia had stretched the lead to the final tally of 21-5.
