ITHACA, N.Y. – The women's squash team won its fifth straight match Saturday in thrilling fashion, edging Dartmouth, 5-4, at the Belkin International Squash Courts.
The seventh-ranked Big Red took a 2-1 lead after the first set of matches behind victories from
Laura Caty in five sets at the No. 9 spot and Jesse Pacheco at No. 3. But the visiting eighth-ranked Big Green pulled even at 3 after the next wave.
Cornell's
Lauren Sachvie won in straight sets at No. 7 to give Cornell the lead back, but the Big Green answered with Melina Turk's four-set victory at No. 4. That left the balance of the match in the hands of the No. 1 spot, where the Big Red had freshman
Danielle Letourneau squaring off against Corey Schafer.
Letourneau won the first and third sets, but Schafer was able to force a fifth set with 12-10 and 17-15 wins in the second and fourth sets, respectively. Letourneau pulled ahead for good in the fifth set to secure a 11-8 win and give the match to Cornell.
Cornell (10-3, 3-1 Ivy League) faces an even bigger test at noon Sunday when undefeated, top-ranked Harvard visits Belkin.
