VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior tri-captain Maneesha Chitanvis scored her first goal of the season, but the Big Red women's soccer team couldn't hold on to the lead in a 2-1 loss to Binghamton on Wednesday night at Bearcats Sports Complex.

Much like last season – when Xandra Hompe scored the only goal of a 1-0 Big Red victory over the Bearcats at Berman Field – Cornell opened the scoring early in the second half. Chitanvis' goal came in the 49th minute, when she spun off a defender inside the box to create some space before slotting a low shot into the net to give the Big Red its second lead of the season.

Freshman Caroline Growney picked up an assist on the play for her first collegiate point. Chitanvis has led the Big Red in scoring each of the last two seasons.

Binghamton (5-1) answered a little less than three minutes on an Emily Nuss goal off a corner kick. Sarah Furminger then scored the winner on a 20-yard strike in the 61st minute. With the win, the Bearcats pulled the all-time series between the teams even at 2-2-2.

Up next, Cornell (0-5) will finally open the home portion of its schedule at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, when it plays host to Sacred Heart of the Northeast Conference. The Big Red will then close out a stretch of three games in five days with a Sunday matinee at La Salle before embarking on Ivy League play Friday, Sept. 21 at Columbia.
