NEW YORK, N.Y. – The women's soccer team came up on the short end of another close result on Friday, dropping a 1-0 tilt at Columbia in its Ivy League opener.
 
Isabel King scored the game's only goal in the eighth minute, finishing a cross from Natalie Melo in the box. It was the only shot to beat Cornell junior goalkeeper Tori Christ, who made three saves in her eighth start of the season.
 
Cornell (0-8, 0-1 Ivy League) forced Columbia's Grace Redmon to make four saves for her shutout, including a pair of second-half offerings from freshman Caroline Growney and another shot from senior Maneesha Chitanvis. It was the Big Red's third one-goal loss in its last four games.
 
Cornell returns to Ithaca for its second home game of the season at 1 p.m. on Sunday, when it opposes Niagara at Charles F. Berman Field.
