Box Score LEWISBURG, Pa. – After scoring what looked to be the game winner in the 40th minute of action, the Big Red field hockey team gave up a pair of goals in the final 11 minutes to fall to Bucknell, 2-1, this evening in Lewisburg, Pa. With the loss, Cornell falls to 0-3 on the season, while the Bison improve to 3-1.
Bucknell dominated the play in the first half, but the Big Red was kept in the contest thanks to junior goalie
Carolyn Horner's five saves in the opening 35 minutes. After the break, senior
Kat DiPastina broke the deadlock with a low, hard shot from the center of the circle to put the visitors up, 1-0, in the 40th minute.
The Bison kept up the offensive pressure and managed to find the equalizer on a penalty corner, as Kiersten Sydnor redirected a shot by Kelly Stefanowicz at the 59:44 mark. Less than six minutes later, Bucknell got the game-winner from Rachel Misko with the assist credited to Maggie Murphy.
Cornell looked to send the game into an extra frame with a pair of excellent chances by
Brittany Thompson and
Hannah Balleza, but both were turned away by Erica Perrine, for two of her three saves on the evening.
Bucknell outshot the Big Red, 26-6, and held a 19-3 advantage on penalty corners.
Horner finished the contest with 10 saves.
Cornell is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 9 when it travels to No. 8 Penn State for a contest at 2 p.m.
