ABOUT THE BIG RED
Cornell will be seeking its first win of the season this weekend against a pair of non-leagues opponents in Colgate and Albany. The Big Red opened its campaign with a tall task, falling to nationally ranked Georgetown by a 6-1 score on Saturday. A Labor Day matinee at George Washington then turned sour after three second-half goals by the Colonials led to a 3-2 victory. All three of the Big Red's tallies were the first collegiate goals for the respective players. Sophomore Jaclyn Katz headed freshman Morgan Zaidel's cross past the Georgetown keeper on Saturday, then senior defender Jayann Gabrio came forward to strike a perfect free kick for the first goal of the game at GW. Sophomore Clara Gallagher then notched Cornell's second goal in the game off a rebound of a Moonie Mancho shot in the second half.

ABOUT COLGATE
The Raiders are 4-2-1, cruising in its last games on Wednesday against Albany, 6-1. Colgate was selected as the preseason favorite to win the Patriot League after advancing to the semifinals last season, losing to eventual champion Army. Three-time leading scorer Jillian Kintner has returned for her senior season, taking a familiar spot atop the statistical list with five goals and three assists for 13 points through Colgate's first seven games. Forward Jenna Raepple (7g-3a—17p) is also back after being named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year and First Team selection as a freshman. Senior goalkeeper Ashley Walsh is also a four-year starter, having posted a 2.01 goals-against average so far this season.

THE SERIES WITH COLGATE
Colgate won last season's meeting in pouring rain at Berman Field in Ithaca, N.Y., bringing the all-time series even with a 15-15-3 record. The Big Red had won the teams' two previous meetings, with two goals from senior Maneesha Chitanvis and another from classmate Hannah Labadie. The Central New York rivals have played each other at least once per season since the Big Red program gained varsity status in 1982.

ABOUT ALBANY
The Greats Danes are 1-3-1 after its 6-1 loss Wednesday at Colgate. Senior Shayla Bergeron leads the team with three goals for six points, all coming in the team's 6-3 victory on Sunday at UNC Asheville. It was the first hat trick in the Great Danes' 34-year program history. Freshman Allison Carhart (2g-1a—5p) is second on the team in scoring, with all of her scoring also coming in the UNC Asheville game. Sophomore Jackie Ubert returns as the Great Danes' starting goalkeeper, having seen most of the time in goal with a 2.73 goals-against average. Freshman Alana Brennan has also made two appearances in goal, having earned the victory with a second-half outing against UNC Asheville.

THE SERIES WITH ALBANY
The Big Red has come out on top in the only two previous meetings between the squads. The first was in 2005, when Kara Ishikawa scored both goals in a 2-1 overtime victory. Cornell then sailed to a 5-0 victory the following year behind three goals from Ithaca native Alison McKeown. The Big Red is 16-9-5 all-time against teams currently in the America East Conference.

HEAD COACH PATRICK FARMER
Now in his 20th season as a head coach in the NCAA, Patrick Farmer has been selected as the Cornell women's soccer program's fifth head coach. Farmer comes to the Big Red via the University of Wisconsin, where he served as an assistant coach with the Badgers' women's soccer team for three years. Prior to his stint at Wisconsin, Farmer has amassed a 261-97-40 record at Ithaca College, Penn State, Tennessee Tech and Syracuse. He also served as a head coach at the professional level for two seasons, heading the New York Power of the Women's United Soccer Association. Megan Ramey returns to Cornell for her second season as an assistant coach, and Dwight Hornibrook also joined the staff just before the start of the season.

A YEAR OF FIRSTS
All three of the Big Red's goals during the D.C. Invitational were the first of the scorer's respective collegiate careers. Sophomore forward Jaclyn Katz tallied Cornell's goal in the opener against nationally ranked Georgetown, then senior defender Jayann Gabrio and sophomore midfielder Clara Gallagher scored on Labor Day at George Washington.

YOUTH IS STILL SERVED
After dressing just two seniors in 2010 and six last season, the Big Red still has a decidedly young slant to its roster. Nineteen of the team's 30 players are underclassmen, including 10 sophomores and nine freshmen.

SHE'S HONORED
Senior forward Maneesha Chitanvis has earned All-Ivy League honorable mention in each of the last two seasons, despite often drawing double-teams from opposing defenses. Chitanvis had five goals and two assists for a team-leading 12 points in both the 2010 and 2011 seasons, scoring two of those goals in Ivy League play both years.

GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES
The Big Red has tri-captains for the fourth time in six years with seniors Maneesha Chitanvis and Jayann Gabrio, and junior goalkeeper Tori Christ wearing the armbands. Chitanvis (Los Alamos, N.M.) is the program's first captain to come to East Hill via the Land of Enchantment. Christ (West Seneca, N.Y.) and Gabrio (Honolulu, Hawaii) are the first Big Red captains from their respective states since 2005, when the team's co-captains were Shannon Fraser (Hamilton, N.Y.) and Kara Ishikawa (Mililani, Hawaii).

NATIONAL APPEAL
The Big Red has 14 different states represented on the team roster, with its home state of New York having five players on the roster. Cornell has four players that hail from New Jersey, three from Michigan, two each from Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Minnesota, California, Virginia, Connecticut and New Mexico, and single representatives of Hawaii, Ohio, Maryland and Colorado.

UP NEXT
Cornell wraps up its season-opening stretch of five road games with a non-league contest at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Binghamton. The Big Red then plays host to Sacred Heart at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14.
