ITHACA, N.Y. -- Forwards
Meera Marhoefer and
Caroline Growney scored goals for the Big Red women's soccer team in a 7-2 loss to Harvard on Saturday afternoon at Berman Field. Cornell falls to 7-4-1 on the season and 1-2 in the Ivy League.
The teams were on fairly level footing through the first half. Junior midfielder
Claire MacManus blasted a 25-yard free kick over the three-man wall in the 20th minute, but the ball soared just over the crossbar.
Harvard (7-3-2, 3-0 Ivy League) finally broke through in the 41st minute on Meg Casscells-Hamby's goal. Karly Zlatic hit a low, hard cross from the right side that creeped off the fingertips of the goalkeeper, and Casscells-Hamby converted from short range on the rebound. MacManus nearly got the Big Red on the board with 1:20 remaining in the half, but her shot from the right side of the box clanked off the far post.
The Crimson broke the game open with a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the second half. The score ballooned to 6-0 before Marhoefer, a freshman reserve, scored her first collegiate goal with a header in the box off a feed from classmate
Dempsey Banks. It was Banks' team-leading sixth assist of the season.
Growney then closed out the scoring in the 87th minute, ripping a shot to the near post after a beautiful through-ball from senior midfielder
Rachel Nichols sent her into the left side of the box.
Cornell returns to action at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at Yale.
