Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Big Red field hockey team scored the first four goals of the contest and held off a late surge by Saint Joseph's to win its third consecutive contest by beating the host Hawks, 4-2, this afternoon in Philadelphia.
Elly Plappert continued her outstanding play, registering one goal and assisting on another within the first 12 minutes of action, while
Georgia Lord,
Katy Weeks and
Hannah Balleza all scored once.
In her first game back from injury, senior goalie
Carolyn Horner made three saves for her 13th career victory, which moves her into a tie for 10th place with Karen Kuhn (1975-77) for the most wins by a goalie in Cornell history.
The Hawks earned a pair of late goals with Jordan Martin and Tori Poinko both scoring in the second half.
Cornell held the edge in shots (15-8), but SJU earned four penalty corners to the Big Red's two.
Hawks goalie Amelia Deibler registered five saves and got a defensive save from Melanie Colozzi.
Plappert got the Big Red on the board in the fourth minute of action when she converted a penalty stroke to give the visitors a lead it would not relinquish. Just over eight minutes later, sent a shot towards goal that was redirected into the net by Lord to make it a 2-0 game.
Weeks sent the visitors into halftime with a 3-0 lead after she put back a rebound off a Deibler save and Balleza scored just under five minutes into the second half to cap the Big Red's scoring on the day.
Cornell is back in action next weekend when it opens a three-game home stand as Ait welcomes Harvard and Lehigh to Marsha Dodson Field. Cornell will take on the Crimson on Saturday, Oct. 19 at noon, before playing host to Lehigh on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.
