ITHACA, N.Y – On a day that began with the Big Red women's soccer team honoring its seven seniors, Cornell suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Brown on Sunday afternoon in double overtime.

Both teams started slow in the chilly conditions, but the Big Red was able to turn it on midway through the first half and contain most of the play within Brown's  defensive third.

In the 29th minute, sophomore Caroline Growney scored her first of two on the afternoon and put the Big Red on top 1-0, jumping on a loose ball on the six-yard line.

The play started when senior Rachel Schlobohm hit a cross to Elizabeth Crowell. Crowell's shot was deflected by a Brown defender and skipped to Growney, who touched the ball waist-high inside the far post past the Bears' keeper Amber Bledsoe.

But Cornell's lead didn't last long, as Brown answered in the 40th minute with a tally of it's own to tie the game at one off a set piece on a corner kick.

Annie Gillen sent the ball into the middle of box for the Bears which was initially played by Alison Mullin, but Mullin was unable to get a shot away. The teams battled for possession in front of Cornell goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney before the ball popped out of the scrum to Louisa Pitney. Pitney beat Tierney high for Brown's first goal.

In the 64th minute the Bears took a 2-1 lead when Chloe Cross volleyed service from Pitney inside the far post.

Down late in the game, Cornell picked up the pace and continuously carried the ball deep in the box, challenging the Brown defenders. In the 82nd minute, it finally paid off.

Growney made a run down the right side and dribbled the ball along the end line, looking to set up someone in front. When she tried to play the ball into the box, it caught a piece of a Brown defender and deflected into the net past MC Barrett, who took over in goal for the Bears in the second half. Growney was credited with her second goal of the afternoon.

Brown dominated the extra sessions, forcing Tierney to make three saves in the first overtime. In the second, Cross sent a high cross from the right corner to Mika Siegelman who headed the ball high inside the far post to beat Tierney and seal the 3-2 victory for the Bears.

Tierney finished with five saves for Cornell (7-6-1, 1-4-0 Ivy League), while Bledsoe and Barrett combined for seven saves for Brown (7-5-1, 3-1-1).

Seniors Tori Christ, Rachel Nichols, Rachel Schlobohm, Andi McIntosh, Mary Keroack and Kasia Jandura-Cessna played their final game on Berman Field, as Sunday's contest concluded the team's home schedule for 2013.
