ITHACA, N.Y. – The tennis teams will host a busy weekend at Reis Tennis Center, with the women's team playing two matches Saturday and the 24th-ranked Big Red men's team competing in a Sunday doubleheader.
On Saturday, the Cornell women (3-0) will get back into action after a 7-0 sweep of Army last weekend. The Big Red takes on Albany at 9:30 a.m., then wraps up the day against Fairleigh Dickinson at 3 p.m.
Senior
Sarah O'Neil (No. 1) and junior
Ryann Young (No. 3) are a perfect 3-0 in singles matches so far, while freshmen
Laila Judeh and
Dena Tanenbaum have the same record from a combination of the Nos. 4 and 5 spots. Young and senior
Christine Ordway are also 3-0 from the No. 2 position in doubles, while the All-Ivy League First Team pair of O'Neil and freshman
Lauren Frazier has won both of its matches at No. 1.
Cornell has played Albany (2-4) in a dual match just once before, defeating the Great Danes, 6-1, on Feb. 10, 2007 in Ithaca, though the teams have seen each other recently. Albany was one of the teams that participating in the Cornell Fall Invitational in September. The Big Red went 9-1 in singles matches and 4-0 in doubles matches against Great Danes competitors. The Big Red is a perfect 4-0 in matches against Fairleigh Dickinson (2-3), including two victories last season.
Fresh off of the squad's second ECAC Indoor Championship in the last three years, the Cornell men (7-1) currently have the highest ranking in program history. The Big Red will take on Binghamton at 1 p.m. Sunday, with the match against Colgate scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
The ITA rankings released Tuesday were the first of the season using the organization's computerized ranking system. Cornell ranked 63rd in the country in last week's poll, but made the big jump despite being idle last weekend. The Big Red's 39-spot jump is the highest among teams in the Top 25.
Sophomore
Sam Fleck, an an All-Ivy League Second Team selection from a year ago, is 6-1 so far in singles, including a perfect 5-0 mark from the No. 2 position. Cornell has shown vast improvement in doubles already this season, where it has won 17 of 23 matches in the early going.
The Big Red has a 22-3 lead in the all-time series against Binghamton (4-4), including a pair of victories when the teams last met during Cornell's Ivy League-winning 2011 season. The Bearcats competed at the Cornell Fall Invitational, with the Big Red holding a 7-6 edge in singles matches and 4-2 advantange in doubles. Robin Lesage plays at the No. 1 singles position for Binghamton, having been defeated by junior
Venkat Iyer and Fleck in the fall. The Bearcats' Sid Hazarika is 7-1 in singles matches to date.
Colgate (2-4) also competed at the Cornell Fall Invitational, coming up empty in nine singles matches and three doubles matches against the Big Red. Cornell holds a 54-16-3 advantage in the all-time series, riding a 14-match winning streak dating back to 1995.
