Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – For the second day in a row, Cornell took an early lead and held on late to complete a series sweep of Brown, topping the Bears 9-6 on a chilly Monday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field. The Big Red improved to 12-14 (2-2 Ivy), while the Bears slipped to 6-12 (0-4 Ivy).
Erin Belles was 2-for-2 with a two-run homer and
Christina Villalon was 1-for-2 with a walk and a grand lam. Both players homered as part of a seven-run first inning.
Emily Weinberg also had a pair of hits in the victory.
Alyson Onyon picked up her second straight win with a complete game victory, scattering 13 hits and getting out of trouble several times, including inducing All-Ivy first baseman Stephanie Thompson to ground into a game-ending double play with her as the go-ahead run at the plate.
Trista Chavez finished the game 3-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBI, while Sam Brady was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and came out of the bullpen to allow just two hits and two runs in the final 5.0 innings after Cornell's offensive explosion in the first inning.
It looked like Cornell's day right away, as Onyon stranded the bases loaded in the top of the first after three Brown singles, then pounded the ball in the bottom of the frame to take the early lead.
Michiko McGivney opened the inning by reaching on an error by the second baseman, followed by Weinberg and
Meg Parker loading the bases with singles. Villalon, who jumped over .400 for the season on the day, slammed a to left that was a no-doubter and it was 4-0.
Jenny Edwards put a charge into the ball for a double, and after Brown finally earned an out, Belles went the opposite way for another no-doubt homer to make it 6-0.
Lauren Bucolo then singles, stole second and scored on McGivney's single up the middle to push it to 7-0.
It looked as though Cornell might earn a five-inning run rule victory when it extended the lead to 9-1 after four thanks to a two-run double by
Leanne Iannucci, but the Bears clawed together a run in the fifth to extend the game, then scored four times in the sixth to get right back into it. The big blow came on Chavez's three-run shot with two outs.
Brown made one last charge in the seventh, loading the bases with one out on a pair of walks and an infield single. Thompson, a career .400 hitter, hit the ball hard to third and Weinberg stepped on the bag for the force, then threw over to first to end the game.
Cornell continues Ivy League play when it visits Dartmouth for a doubleheader on Friday, April 5 at 2 p.m. in Hanover, N.H.
