Softball Sweeps Columbia To Get Back To .500

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Cornell softball team was able to continued its hot play by sweeping a doubleheader at Columbia on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the Lions 7-5 and 6-0. WIth the victories, the Big Red evened its record to 16-16 and bumped its conference record to 6-4. The Big Red moved into a tie for second place and picked up a game on first-place Penn.

Trailing 5-4 heading into the seventh inning of game one, the Big Red scored three times to earn the victory. A Christina Villalon double tied the contest, then Kristen Towne's RBI single gave the visitors a lead it wouldn't relinqush. Michiko McGivney took a two-out hit by pitch to score the final run of the contest.

That three-run rally for the Big Red answered a three-run outburst by the Lions in the bottom of the sixth that gave Columbia its first and only lead of the day.

Emily Weinberg was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, while McGivney ane Erin Belles each had two hits. McGivney cranked her fifth home run of the season in the sixth inning.

Alyson Onyon improved to 11-9 by scattering 11 hits in a complete game triumph.

Game two saw a breakout game in the circle from freshman Meg Parker, who went 6.0 innings of six-hit ball without a walk to take the victory. The Big Red scored two in the third and broke the contest open with a four-run seventh inning.

Nine different players had a hit apiece, with both Parker and Leanne Iannucci each driving in a pair of runs.

The two teams will again square off in a doubleheader on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
