ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past Ivy League South Division leader Penn in game two and forced a Saturday afternoon split. The Quakers won game one 13-0 in five innings before the Big Red collected themselves for a 10-9 triumph in game two at Niemand*Robison Field. Cornell moved to 17-21 (7-7 Ivy), while the Quakers are now 22-16 (11-3 Ivy).
Penn was in a great position to sweep the Saturday doubleheader, leading 9-6 with star pitcher Alexis Borden on the mound heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. In her last 13.0 innings of work against the Big Red, dating back to last season, Borden had allowed just two hits and zero runs.
Cornell was up for the challenge.
Christina Villalon, who had already doubled and homered in the game, opened the inning with a walk and Belles followed suit. Two batters later,
Kristen Towne singled to bring the Big Red within 9-7.
Lauren Bucolo drew yet another walk to load the bases and
Linda Laeufer came up big, singling past a drawn-in infield to knot the score at 9-9. With runners on first and third,
Michiko McGivney drove a pitch deep to centerfield, but centerfielder Jessica Melendez pulled a potential home run back into the field. Fortunately for the Big Red, Bucolo tagged up at third and was easily able to come home as McGivney was credited with a walk-off sacrifice fly.
Alyson Onyon picked up the win, gutting out a complete game triumph to even her record at 12-12 on the year. She threw 151 pitches and surrendered eight hits and six walks, but also struck out seven and stranded five Quaker baserunners.
Villalon was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a home run and four RBI. Towne was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBU and
Meg Parker went 2-for-4 with two doubles for the Big Red. Samantha Erose led Penn thanks to a 3-for-4 day with a home run, three runs scored and three RBI.
Cornell had jumped out of the gates with three runs in the first, assuring themselves it wouldn't be a repeat of game one. The big blow was a two-run homer by Villalon to right after a Parker double had made it 1-0. Penn scored the next seven, including a four-run third to take the lead. Cornell answered back to within 7-5 in the fifth on a two-run double by Villalon and an RBI single by Towne. The Quakers did all they could to put the game away in the sixth, scoring two more to extend its lead to 9-6 heading into the final frame, setting up Cornell's rally.
Game two was nothing like game one. Penn scored six runs in the third to burst open that game, then scored seven in the fifth to run-rule the Big Red in game one. Setting the tempo for the Quakers was Dahlerbruch, whose grand slam in the third made it 5-0 after the Quakers plated their first. The visiting team scraped together seven, all with two outs, behind six hits and two walks. Sydney Turchin's RBI double made it 8-0 and the Quakers continued to pour it on. That was plenty for Penn's Borden, who hurled a complete game two-hitter. She did walk three and hit a pair of batters, but Cornell couldn't string any of their threats together.
Cornell's only two hits came from
Erin Belles and
JJ Briggs, while McGivney drew two walks.
The Big Red and the Quakers will suit back up tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Niemand*Robison Field.
