CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Cornell softball team split a doubleheader at defending Ivy League champion Harvard on Saturday afternoon, topping the Crimson 10-7 in game one before falling in the nightcap 11-2 in five innings. The Big Red moved to 14-16 (4-4 Ivy) with the split.
After jumping out to an early 5-0 lead in game one, the Big Red was forced to battle back after the home team scored seven straight. Cornell answered the call with two in the sixth to knot the game at 7-7, then plated three in the seventh to earn the win. The Big Red had 11 hits, including three apiece by
Michiko McGivney,
Meg Parker and
Christina Villalon. McGivney was 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored and two RBI, while Villalon was 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored.
Cornell exploded for three runs in the top of the first, with RBI singles by Villalon and
Lauren Bucolo, as well as a bases loaded walk by
Jenny Edwards. The visitors extended the lead to 5-0 in the third on an RBI double by Villalon and a sacrifice fly by
Leanne Iannucci.
Harvard got two runs back in the bottom of the third, three to tie in the fourth and two more to take the lead in the fifth before the Big Red answered. Villalon hit a run-scoring double and another run scored on an error after a
Meg Parker single. Heading into the seventh tied at 7-7, Cornell exploded to regain the advantage. An Edwards double started it, and three batters later, McGivney singled to center to score two runs. A Parker double added an insurance run and the Crimson couldn't answer in the bottom of the frame despite a one-out single.
Game two followed a different script, as the Crimson broke open a 4-2 game with seven runs in the fifth inning to end the nightcap early. Cornell got up early with back-to-back doubles by
Emily Weinberg and Parker to go up 1-0, but Harvard knotted the score in the bottom of the inning. The Big Red pushed ahead to go up 2-1 on an
Erin Belles RBI single, but again the Crimson came back. This time, the home team scored twice to go up 3-2. After adding a run in the fourth, Harvard entered the fifth leading 4-2. Cornell loaded the bases with one out in the top half of the inning, but Harvard was able to get out unscathed. The Big Red wouldn't be so fortunate in the bottom half. Harvard struck for seven as five o the first six hitters reached safely and Haley Davis ended the game with a walk-off grand slam.
Weinberg was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored as Cornell had eight hits in just five innings in game two.
Cornell returns to action on Wednesday, April 10 at 3:30 p.m. when it visits Syracuse.
