ABOUT THE BIG RED
Cornell got its first taste of these California teams when it swept a season-opening West Coast trip last season and was able to even out its record against Golden State teams at 3-3. Prior to that, the Big Red was 1-3 in California with a 1-1 record against Cal and 0-2 record against Stanford. After starting 2013 with a 1-0-1 record, Cornell is now 15-0-4 in its last 19 regular season non-league contests. The draw against Detroit Mercy was the team's first since tying Columbia 1-1 in the last game of the regular season in 2011; Cornell played to six draws that season.
HEAD COACH JARO ZAWISLAN
After taking over a program that was 1-15 the season before his appointment as head coach,
Jaro Zawislan has steadily improved men's soccer at Cornell; transforming an eight-place team into Ivy League Champions and coaching the Big Red to the program's best season in nearly two decades. Zawislan, a native of Poland, now holds a 34-18-17 record after last weekend's games at Hartwick. He played soccer for four years at Clemson and then spent time professionally in the United States and Poland.
ABOUT CAL STATE FULLERTON
The Titans were on the losing end of a double-overtime contest on Sunday, falling 3-2 after squandering a 2-0 lead to San Diego. They, like Cornell, are a relatively young team with 10 freshmen and just five seniors. Eight different Titans have made it on to the score sheet already this season, with senior midfielder Ritchie Gonzalez leading the team with three points ( 1g, 1a).
ABOUT LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
The Lions are 2-0 to start the year, having only conceded one goal which came in their season-opening contest against Florida International. An experienced team with only three freshmen on the active roster, Loyola seems much improved when compared to the start of 2012. The Lions were 1-4-1 before earning their second victory last season.
CU INARIA CLASSIC
Cornell, Colgate, Cal State Fullerton and Loyola Marymount are competing this weekend in the third CU Inaria Classic, a set of four matches that will crown a champion at the conclusion. Cornell won the first CU Inaria Classic, defeating Hofstra and Long Island University to earn six points and top the tournament standings, and won last year's weather-shortened tournament based on its head-to-head result against Wofford, whom the Big Red defeated 2-1. Colgate will be playing Loyola Marymount on Friday and Cal State Fullerton on Sunday in the Classic's other two games of the weekend.
USE YOUR HEAD
Patrick Slogic picked up right where he left off last season, when he scored two goals at crucial times for the Big Red on headers. With Cornell down 1-0 late in the game against Hartwick, Slogic moved into the box to receive a
Stephen Reisert corner kick which he headed into the back of the net for the equalizer.
MOVING FORWARD
After spending his freshman season listed as a defenseman who logged minutes as a forward,
Devin Morgan has moved up front full-time for the Big Red. It took him less than 17 minutes to make his presence known, as he notched the first goal of his career against Detroit Mercy.
OFF THE LINE
Zach Zagorski only played 13 minutes and 15 seconds through two games in 2012 and made one save. With six saves in just over 216 minutes, he's already had a significant impact for the Big Red this season. One of those six saves came in the closing minutes of regulation against Hartwick when he came off of his line to stop a Hawk breakaway and help send the game to overtime.
TESTING THE WATERS
Seven freshmen saw their first action in a Cornell uniform last weekend, with
Jack Ferguson logging the most minutes played with 171.
Cameron Taylor started both games up front for the Big Red and
Sebastian Scales was the only first-year player to record a point; earning the assist on
Conor Goepel's game-winning double-overtime score on Sunday.
IVY HONORS
Goepel and Scales both earned Ivy League honorable mentions last week for player and rookie of the week honors, respectively, for their collaboration on the game-winning tally.
UP NEXT
The Big Red will play the third and final game of its home stand Wednesday Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. against Binghamton University.
