Ithaca, N.Y. –
Conor Goepel is no stranger to late-game heroics. For the second time in as many games, Goepel netted the game-winning goal for the Big Red in an extra session.
He also set up the game-tying goal late in regulation.
Cal State Fullerton got on the board first in the 64th minute when David Beary sent a cross from the right sideline into the box and onto the head of Ian Ramos, who redirected the ball just inside the far post past the outstretched hands of Cornell keeper
Zach Zagorski.
The Big Red pressured the Titans in the final minutes of regulation, but weren't able to solve Fullerton goalkeeper Bryan Escalante. That is, not until the 89th minute when officials stopped the clock for a Fullerton injury, giving the Big Red time to regroup and plan its attack.
When play resumed,
Stephen Reisert sent a lofty corner kick into the box which rattled around before landing on Goepel's foot 20 yards out. Goepel sent a cross to the opposite post, where senior
Jake Rinow was waiting to head the ball past Escalante for the equalizer; sending Cornell to its third overtime in three games.
Fullerton had several scoring opportunities in the opening minutes of the first overtime, but the Big Red defense and Zagorski were able to thwart the Titans' attack and regain momentum.
It was in the 96th minute that senior
Jake Kirsch found Goepel at the top right corner of the box. Unmarked, Goepel floated a shot just under the crossbar to beat Escalante and seal the victory for Cornell.
The junior midfielder now has five points for the season. Zagorski finished the game with four saves.
Cornell will play Loyola Marymount on Sunday Sept. 15 at 5:30 p.m. in the final game of the CU Inaria Classic, as the Big Red seeks its third consecutive Inaria Cup.
