ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore forward
Caroline Growney two goals and freshman goalkeeper
Kelsey Tierney made three saves for her first collegiate shutout, leading the women's soccer team to its third consecutive victory with a 2-0 win over Binghamton on Wednesday evening at Berman Field.
Growney, who now leads the team with three goals on the season, gave the Big Red the lead in the 26th minute. Senior midfielder
Rachel Nichols earned the assist, playing a long cross from 25 yards out across the goal. The Binghamton goalkeeper charged out to try to snag it, but it skipped off her fingertips toward Growney close to the end line. From a very sharp angle, Growney deftly finished with a shot off the far post.
The game featured few scoring chances for either team, with the Big Red back line of junior
Kelly Abrams, sophomore
Charlotte Tate, and freshmen
Kailey Joyce and
Taylor Wright -- with the assistance of substitute
Morgan Zaidel -- playing a solid game in front of Tierney, who was never seriously tested.
Growney extended the Cornell (4-1-1) lead to two goals exactly four goals into the second half. Freshman
Dempsey Banks gahtered the ball about 20 yards out from goal, then beat a pair of defenders wide before sending the ball back toward the middle. Growney then made a lunging effort to from the middle of the box that beat the keeper to the far post. It was Banks' team-leading fourth assist of the season.
Growney became the first member of the Big Red to score two goals in a game since fellow New Mexico native
Maneesha Chitanvis in a 4-1 victory over Lafayette on Oct. 2, 2012. The Big Red now has three clean sheets on the season, which is the most it's had since 2010.
Cornell, which is unbeaten in its last four games, will play Cincinnati in a neutral-site game at 7 p.m. Friday at University of Bridgeport before returning home for a home game at 4 p.m. Sunday against NJIT.
