Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Big Red field hockey team came from behind to tie the score twice, but couldn't find a final equalizer, as it fell to Penn, 4-3 this afternoon on Ellen Vagelos Field in Philadelphia, Pa. With the loss, Cornell falls to 2-3 overall (0-1 Ivy), while the Quakers improve to 3-1 on the season (1-0 Ivy).

Elly Plappert scored twice to lead the Big Red, while Marisa Siergiej added a goal off a penalty corner. Both Taylor Standiford and Hannah Balleza registered one assist.

Penn received three goals from Jasmine Cole, while Emily Corcoran added a goal and two assists.

Cornell outshot the Quakers, 20-8, and held the 10-9 advantage in penalty corners, but the home team was kept in the game by the stellar play of its goalie Carly Sokach, who finished with 12 saves, including stopping a Cornell penalty stroke with seven minutes to play that would have tied the game at 4-4.

Carolyn Horner made three saves in 44:47 before giving way to Elizabeth Schaeffler, who did not face a shot on goal.

The game got off to a quick start, with Corcoran scoring just 33 seconds into the contest. Just over four minutes later, Plappert knotted the game at 1-1 when she blasted a shot from just inside the circle past Sokach.

Cole made it a 2-1 game when she scored off a penalty corner in the 15th minute, but just over two minutes later, Siergiej answered with a penalty corner goal of her own to make it 2-2.

Back-to-back penalty corner goals by Cole bookended intermission and gave Penn a 4-2 lead.

Plappert made it a one-goal game with a great individual effort in the 47th minute and Cornell dominated the rest of the game, but could not find the equalizer.
