ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Rachel Nichols scored twice, helping the women's soccer team cruise to a 4-0 victory over New Jersey Institute of Technology on Sunday afternoon at Berman Field.

Nichols got the Big Red on the board after freshman Dempsey Banks started the play by setting up freshman Elizabeth Crowell for a shot that was blocked in the box. But the ball deflected back to Banks near the end line, and she sent another pass into a dangerous area that Nichols got on the end of, sending a shot high inside the far post in the eighth minute. The assist was Banks' fifth of the season, keeping her among the nation's top assist producers. She started the weekend ranked 29th in the NCAA with 0.67 assists per game.

Sophomore Caroline Growney then scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick after draw a foul in the box. She lined up a shot that beat the keeper to her right, doubling the Big Red's lead and giving the team its second goal from the spot this season.

Crowell then cashed in her third goal of the season a little less than three minutes before the half. Senior Rachel Schlobohm set up the play with a cross from the right side, then Crowell boomed a shot that riccocheted off the crossbar and the back of the NJIT keeper and over the goal line. It was Schlobohm's first career point.

Already dominating in possession and territorially, Cornell (5-2-1) tacked on a fourth goal in the second half. Banks sent defender Charlotte Tate on a run down the left side deep in NJIT territory, and the sophomore beat her defender wide before sending a strong cross that sailed deep into the box. Nichols ran on to the ball and struck a perfect shot from 12 yards inside the far post for her third goal of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney made the start, stopping two shots before yielding to senior Tori Christ for the final 28-plus minutes. Christ was called upon to make just one save, and the Big Red earned its fourth clean sheet of the season.

The Big Red have no mid-week games for the first time this season as it prepares for Friday's Ivy League opener against Columbia at 7 p.m. under the lights at Berman Field.
