Box Score (PDF) HAMILTON, N.Y. – Cornell men's soccer wrapped up its non-conference slate on a blustery Tuesday evening at local rival Colgate. The Big Red bested the Raiders 1-0 on a seventh minute goal from
JJ Black. With the clean sheet - the eighth of the season by the Big Red - the 2014 squad tied the 2013 team for the most shutouts in a single season in program history.
Senior keeper
Zach Zagorski made three saves to notch his seventh clean sheet of the season, moving him into a tie with Hemant Sharma '96 and Stephen Bott '83 for third most in a single-season in the history of the program.
Cornell (7-4-1) kicked the offense into high gear on the fast track at Beyer-Small Field, striking in the seventh minute to take the early lead. After stealing the ball in the midfield,
JJ Black and
Jack Ferguson hit Colgate with a quick counter down the left flank. Black fed Ferguson at the left side of the box and made a diagonal run toward the near post. Ferguson quickly labeled a perfect lead pass to Black, who split the defense and slotted home a low shot into the left corner of the net past Colgate keeper Ricky Brown.
Colgate (4-7-1) nearly equalized just two minutes later. Midfielder Nick Rizzo took a shot at net from 15-yards out, launching a howitzer toward the left corner of the net. Zagorski lunged to his left to make an athletic save, pushing the ball wide.
The Raiders earned another excellent chance in the 26
th minute as Ethan Kutler drew a free kick from 25-yards out. Kutler took the opportunity driving a hard one hopper directly into Zagorski's chest for the easy save.
Colgate continued to look dangerous as the half winded to conclusion. The Raider drew another free kick in the Cornell third, but again Kutlers attempt sailed directly to Zagorski for the easy save. Just minutes later, another free kick delivery from Kutler sailed into the box, but Tyler Forbes directed just high of the crossbar on the header attempt.
The onus shifted to the Big Red in the final minutes of the opening half. Senior
Atticus DeProspo made a terrific run down the left flank and sent a devilish delivery across the face of goal, but the cross went just high of senior
Conor Goepel's lunging header attempt.
Cornell drew one final opportunity in the final moments of the opening 45 minutes. The Big Red earned a free kick from 15 yards out straight on to the face of goal. Goepel took the opportunity, bending the shot just wide of the left post.
The second session got off to a fast start as both teams had excellent opportunities with set pieces. Cornell earned the first opportunity as sophomore
Sebastian Scales drew a foul just outside the Raider box. Goepel took the attempt, but drove his shot attempt directly into the wall. Minutes later, the Raiders earned a similar free kick, but this time turnabout was fair play as Kutler also drove his shot attempt into the Big Red wall.
After the flurry of chances for both squads, play bogged down in the midfield, as both teams played takeaway-giveaway. The Raiders were finally able to manufacture a chance in the 61
st minute. Midfielder Troy Moo Penn made a hard drive to net through a hole in the Big Red defense. He ripped a shot from 20-yards out, but flubbed the shot with the ball drifting well wide to left of Zagorski.
After a series of sloppy play in the midfield, Cornell manufactured a nice chance building through the back in the 75
th minute. Goepel fed DeProspo at the left of net in the attacking third. DeProspo made a nice turn and played the ball down to the end line to a streaking
Eric Nuss. The freshman sent a ball across the box looking for fellow first year player
Jonathan Cullom, but the delivery was just high ending the Cornell threat.
Colgate tried to hit the Big Red on the counter in the 78
th minute. Midfielder Jared Stroud received ball with considerable space in the middle of the field. He ripped a shot from 15-yards, but the ball sailed well wide of the net.
The Big Red had a chance of its own two minutes later looking to extend the lead. Nuss sent a long ball into the box to Ferguson who bodied the ball back to
Madison Heck at the top of the box. The sophomore ripped a laser that drifted high of the cross bar.
The Raiders nearly equalized off a corner in the 83
rd minute. Kutler sent a dangerous ball into the box. The ball bounced around before falling to Colgate defenseman Zach Tamen. He put a shot on net with Zagorski caught out of position, but DeProspo made a huge stop to clear it off of the goal line.
Colgate made one final last gasp effort, earning a free kick at midfield. The Raiders brought keeper Ricky Brown out to take it driving a ball into the Cornell box. The ball was deflected away, but was sent back into the box for a last ditch chance. Nick Rizzo got a head to it as time expired with the final chance drifting high of the bar.
Cornell will return to action this Saturday as it returns to Berman Field for homecoming weekend. The Big Red will welcome Yale for a 4 p.m. kick.
