Box Score (PDF) NEW YORK – Cornell men's soccer closed out its 2014 season on a winning note Saturday evening, beating Columbia 1-0 in double-overtime at Rocco Commisso Soccer Stadium. The victory was the Big Red's 10
th of the season, the second time in the last three years the program has notched a double-digit wins.
Senior
Conor Goepel scored the game-winning tally in the 106
th minute of play. The mark came off a continued play following a corner kick. Senior
Peter Chodas took the set piece sending an arcing cross to the back post. The ball sailed long of the target and bounded toward the near-side corner flag. Sophomore
Stevin Bienfait tracked down the ball and made a nice move to beat the on-rushing defender down the end-line. He feathered a cross back into the box perfectly to the foot of Goepel in the center-high slot. He fired a shot that squeezed past Columbia keeper Kyle Jackson into the back of the net. The goal was Goepel's fifth game-winner of the season and 11
th of his Big Red career.
With the shutout, the 2014 squad extended its program record with its 11
th shutout of the year. The clean sheet also tied the 2014 Big Red with last season's team in goals allowed for the season (11).
Cornell (10-6-1; 3-4-0 Ivy League) keeper
Zach Zagorski concluded his collegiate career with a heroic performance. He made two highlight-reel game-saving stops in the waning minutes of regulation to preserve the shutout. He finished with four saves and collected his 10
th clean sheet of the season, also extending his single-season program record.
The first half was extremely tactical as both teams felt each other out. Neither team was able to generate many quality scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes, with Cornell leading 3-to-1 in shot – none of which went on goal for either team.
The Lions came out strong in the second half and pushed the pace in the Cornell third. Columbia (7-8-1; 2-4-1 Ivy League) nearly solved the Cornell defense on several occasions, but each time Zagorski shut the door. His finest moments came in the final five minutes, as the senior made two spectacular saves to keep the game scoreless.
The first came with just over four minutes to play. With Cornell (10-6-1; 3-4-0 Ivy League) holding possession in the Columbia (7-8-1; 2-4-1 Ivy League) third for several minutes, the Lions were able to strip the ball and start a quick breakout. They were able connect a string of quick passes to move the ball up the left flank to enter the Cornell third. Columbia moved the ball to the middle to the team's second leading point getter Rhys Williams. He cut the ball back to his left foot and whipped a bending shot towards the far left post. Zagorski sprawled to his right and was able to push the ball just wide for a corner kick.
The second big save came off of the ensuing corner, as Williams got a head to the delivery from point-blank range at the right post. Zagorski made a reactionary save to extend his leg and get boot to knock the ball out of harm's way.
Cornell dominated the overtime sessions leading Columbia 4-1 in shots for the period. Chodas, freshman
Jonathan Cullom and sophomore
Jack Ferguson all got quality looks at the net, with Goepel finally capitalizing just inside the opening horn.
The win sends the seven seniors of the Class of 2015 off on a deserving high-note. The team collected its 41
st win overall over their four years.
