Three-Match Weekend Ahead for #8 Men's Squash

2/6/2014 7:34:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. — With the Potter Cup quickly approaching, the men's squash will play its final three matches of the regular season this weekend. The Big Red plays host to Penn and Hobart on Friday before hitting the road for a pivotal Sunday match at Princeton.

Cornell (6-5, 3-2 Ivy League) is coming off a split of a four-match weekend, earning victories over Navy and Dartmouth and suffering defeats against Franklin & Marshall and Harvard. The results leave the Big Red exactly where it's been all season – aligned with the eighth and final place for the national championships, the Potter Cup. Cornell then had its Wednesday match at Rochester canceled due to inclement weather.

Junior Aditya Jagtap was the Big Red's top performer last weekend, winning all four of his matches at the No. 2 position to improve his team-leading season record to 9-2. Senior Nick Sachvie (No. 1) and sophomore Abhijit Malik (No. 8) each won three of their respective four matches over the weekend.

A pair of victories Friday would essentially guarantee the Big Red a Potter Cup berth. The squad opens against No. 10 Penn (7-3, 3-2) at 5 p.m., seeking its seventh straight victory in the all-time series. The Big Red secured a 9-0 sweep of the Quakers in their last meeting at Belkin International Squash Courts on Feb. 12, 2012, then Cornell won a 7-2 affair last season. Penn is coming off a 9-0 loss to Yale and 8-1 victory over Brown last weekend.

Immediately following the match against the Quakers, the Big Red will take on No. 28 Hobart. Cornell is 43-5 in the series and has won the last five meetings without conceding a point.

The weekend concludes with a trip to No. 7 Princeton (4-6, 2-3). The Tigers are coming off a near-upset of top-ranked Yale (5-4) and also have a pair of close 6-3 matches against teams above them in the rankings, Trinity and Rochester. Cornell defeated Princeton, 5-4, on Feb. 8, 2013 in the teams' last meeting. The Tigers were undefeated and ranked No. 1 at the time.
