#7 Men's Squash Pulls Away From #9 Princeton, 6-3

2/9/2014 6:18:00 PM

PRINCETON, N.J. — Seniors Nick Sachvie and Bryan Keating, and sophomore Graham Dietz swept the final shift for men's squash on Sunday to lift the Big Red to a 6-3 victory over Princeton in the teams' regular-season finale.

The victory should cement Cornell's position in the top flight of the College Squash Association's national championships, the Potter Cup. The Big Red (9-5, 5-2 Ivy League) was ranked seventh in the nation before winning all three of its matches this weekend, including triumphs over No. 8 Penn and No. 9 Princeton (5-7, 3-4). The top eight teams comprise the Potter Cup field.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead Sunday, but the Big Red won the other two tightly contested matches of the first shift. Freshman Harry Freeman fought off losses in the first and third games at No. 9, eventually pulling ahead in five to knot the score at 1. Senior Rishi Jalan needed extra points in two of his four games at No. 6, including a 17-15 marathon in the finale to stake the Big Red to a 2-1 lead.

Princeton responded by winning two of the three matches in the middle shift to tie the score at 3, with Cornell's victory coming from sophomore Gustav Runersjö in four games at No. 5. But by the time the Tigers tied the score, Sachvie was already most of the way through his three-game sweep at No. 1 to put the Big Red one point away from clinching with two matches to play.

Keating accounting for the all-important fifth point with a three-game win at No. 4 before Dietz wrapped up the afternoon by outlasting his opponent at No. 7.
