ITHACA, N.Y. – After getting doubleheaders washed out on both Sunday and Monday, including an Ivy League twinbill against Harvard, the Cornell softball team is hoping for brighter things to come as it begins a stretch of at least eight games in five days on Tuesday, April 1.
Cornell will visit Georgetown (Tuesday, April 1 at 4 p.m.) and George Washington (Wednesday, April 2 at 2 p.m. before returning to conference play at Yale (Friday, April 4 at 2 p.m.) and Brown (Saturday, April 5 at 12:30 p.m.) this weekend. In between, the Big Red may try and reschedule a two-game set with Mount St. Mary's that was postponed on Monday due to poor weather.
The Big Red enters the week with a 7-12 overall mark and looking to snap a four-game losing streak after a home doubleheader sweep at the hands of defending Ivy League North Division champion Dartmouth on Saturday. The Big Green won games by scores of 5-1 and 8-2 before Sunday's doubleheader against Harvard was postponed.
The Big Red is looking to break out its offense, which is hitting just .235 through its first 19 contests. Leading the way is senior All-Ivy League selection
Christina Villalon (.341), who paces the team with four doubles. She is the lone regular hitting better than .300, though both junior
Sam Creamer (.368) and senior
JJ Briggs (.333) are over that mark while playing part-time. Sophomores
Meg Parker (.269, four doubles, two home runs, eight RBI) and
Leanne Iannucci (.286, home run, four RBI) are also among the top contributors at the plate. Cornell has struggled in its last nine games entering the week, hitting .179 and scoring 14 runs over that span.
The Big Red pitching has been solid. Senior All-Ivy hurler
Alyson Onyon is 2-4 with 2.86 ERA and is allowing opponents to hit just .254. Both
Sammy Roth (2-3, 4.07 ERA) and
Meg Parker (3-5, 4.32 ERA) have also seen significant time in the circle and have combined for 74 strikeouts and 54 walks in 123.1 innings of work.
In his 19th year at the helm of the Cornell softball program, head coach
Dick Blood has set an impressive standard of excellence. The Big Red has won five Ivy League titles (1999, 2001, 2004, 2009, 2010) and has captured four of the last five Ivy League South Division crowns. Cornell has finished first or second in the Ivy League in 13 of the last 16 seasons. Blood has accumulated an impressive 595-309-2 career record, including a 192-93 mark in Ivy play.
