HENLEY-ON-THAMES – One of the best seasons in Cornell men's lightweight rowing history came to an end today when the Big Red fell to Oxford Brookes University by a half-length in the Temple Challenge Cup semifinal race at the 175th Henley Royal Regatta.
The Cornell varsity eight posted an undefeated regular season before winning both the Eastern Sprints and the IRA national championship. The Big Red easily won its first three races at Henley before slipping this afternoon one race shy of the championship.
In the first race of the Regatta, the Big Red earned a convincing victory by defeating Manchester University by two lengths, winning in a time of 6:42. The Big Red has advanced to the round of 16 where it defeated Durham University by nearly four lengths. The Big Red earned its final victory by defeating Algemene Amsterdamsche Studenten Roeivereniging Skøll by nearly three lengths to advance to the semifinals..
This season marked Cornell's first trip to Henley since 2008, when the Big Red also advanced to the semifinals before falling to the Stanford freshmen heavyweight crew.
