Shanay Fischer scored in the 100th minute Sunday, and the women's soccer team is off to its best start to a season since 2005 after a 1-0 victory at Binghamton.
Freshman
Tess Pullano created the winning goal after having come on as a substitute less than two minutes earlier. With just 54 seconds left in what would have been the first overtime period, Pullano dispossessed a Bearcats defender deep in BU territory on the right side. She then delivered a perfect curling cross onto the head of Fischer at the top of the 6-yard box. Fischer's header slipped by the right hand of Bearcats goalie Gaby Gold and gave the Big Red its second overtime victory of the season. The assist is Pullano's first collegiate point.
The goal wrapped up a day of few offensive chances on the artificial surface of Bearcats Sports Complex. There were just a combined 15 shots toward goal for the two sides, and a total of just three saves. Two of those belonged to Gold on second-half shots by senior
Kerry Schubert and freshman
Whitney Farber.
The only other shot on goal was by Binghamton's Katie O'Neill in the final minute of the first half, and it was stopped by sophomore goalkeeper
Kelsey Tierney. But it was classmate
Dana Daniels who earned the victory after playing the second half and overtime, though she was never called upon to make a save. It's Daniels' first collegiate win.
Cornell (5-1) has five victories in its first six games for the first time since it was a perfect 6-0 to start the 2005 campaign. The Big Red has now won four of its last five meetings with Binghamton to take a 4-2-2 all-time series lead.
Up next, Cornell will kick off Ivy League play at 7 p.m. Friday at Columbia before returning to Ithaca for a non-league contest against Wagner at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28
