Men's Tennis Takes On Iowa, GW In First Home Dual Matches

ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's tennis team will play its first home dual matches of the season this weekend, when the Big Red plays host to Iowa at 5 p.m. Friday and George Washington at 1 p.m. Saturday at Reis Tennis Center.

Cornell (1-3) has lost its last three matches against teams currently in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's top 75 teams in the country. The Big Red is also among that crowd, remaining at No. 65 the new rankings released Wednesday. Bernardo Casares Rosa is 2-0 in singles play, having defeated Texas-San Antonio's Diego Casa at No. 2 and Indiana's Raheem Manji at the No. 3 position. Both Colin Sinclair (No. 5) and Dylan Brown (No. 6) are 2-1 on the young season.

Iowa is off to a 2-0 start, having defeated Western Michigan and Western Illinois in home matches last Sunday. Matt Hagan is ranked 116th in singles, and pairs with Dominic Patrick to form the No. 31 doubles team in the country. The tandem won the Big Ten Indoor Championships doubles title this fall. This will be the third all-time meeting between the Big Red and the Hawkeyes, with the teams splitting the two previous meetings. Iowa won, 9-0, in 1987, then the Big Red responded with a 5-2 decision on March 22, 2003 in a neutral-site match in Orlando, Fla.

George Washington is 0-2 heading into Friday morning's home match against East Carolina. The Colonials competed in the ITA Kickoff event last weekend, losing to national contender Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth. GW, which is currently ranked 57th in the country, won the Atlantic-10 title in 2014. It was GW's third conference crown in the last four years, but the Big Red won last season's meeting between the two programs to take an 8-4 lead in the all-time series. Six of the 10 players on GW's roster are freshmen. The lone senior, Francisco Dias, started the spring season ranked 109th in singles.

Both matches at Reis Tennis Center are free and open to the public.
