Sprint Football Drops Home Opener To Army West Point

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell sprint football held Army West Point to its lowest point total of the season as the Black Knights won 33-0 at Schoellkopf Field on Saturday afternoon. Through its first two games of the season, Army West Point had averaged 60 points a game.

The Black Knights (3-0) scored just one touchdown in the first quarter, on their first drive, before their second drive was interrupted by an interception from Cornell sophomore Karriem Royster, who returned it nine yards.

Time of possession was nearly even, with Army West Point holding the ball for 30:59 and the Big Red (2-1) for 29:01. Cornell's best scoring chance of the day came on the Big Red's first drive of the fourth quarter. Senior wide receiver Trevor Marrero got behind the Black Knights' defense and junior quarterback Rob Pannullo found him in the end zone. Marrero dove to make the catch and landed just out-of-bounds.

In addition to cutting Army West Point's point average nearly in half, the Cornell defense also held the Black Knights to the fewest first downs they have had all season and their lowest total yardage. Junior John Zelek led the Big Red with six solo tackles, including a stop for a loss of five yards. CSFL Defensive Player of the Week junior Chris D'Ambrosio was right behind with five solo hits, including one for a loss of three.

Cornell will stay at home for its next matchup, a bout with fellow Ivy, Penn, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9 at Schoellkopf Field.
