ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 1 Cornell men's lightweight rowing team defeated No. 9 Dartmouth this morning on the Cayuga Lake Inlet to cap its second consecutive undefeated season in head-to-head competition, improving to 7-0 on the year. The Big Red, which finished with a 6-0 record a year ago, last registered consecutive undefeated seasons when it was a perfect 28-0 over a five-year span from 1964 to 1968.
Cornell swept the Big Green, giving the Big Red sweeps of its last four opponents – No. 6 Yale, No. 2 Columbia and No. 5 MIT – and won its fourth consecutive Baggaley Bowl
The morning started with a resounding victory by the Cornell fifth varsity eight boat over the Dartmouth fourth varsity by nearly 30 seconds.
The Big Red varsity eight was nearly as dominant in the race for the Baggaley Bowl, crossing the line in a time of 5:56.8, a full 15 seconds ahead of Dartmouth.
In the second varsity eight, both the Cornell second varsity and third varsity bested the Dartmouth second varsity eight, with the Big Red's lead boat finishing in 6:14.8.
The morning wrapped up with the Cornell fourth varsity eight defeating the Big Green's third varsity eight by just over 10 seconds, winning in a time of 6:15.0.
The Big Red will have two weeks off to prepare for Eastern Sprints, held Sunday, May 17 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
