HENLEY-ON-THAMES, Eng. – The Big Red lightweight varsity eight saw its season come to an end this morning in the semifinal race of the Temple Challenge Cup, as it fell to an extremely talented A.S.R. Nereus crew that set a new course record in yesterday's quarterfinals in optimal tailwind conditions.
Cornell had a tremendous start and blasted off the line, but with a significant weight advantage Nereus quickly overtook the Big Red and took the one and one-half length victory in a time of 6:46.
Day Three ResultsHENLEY-ON-THAMES, Eng. – For the second year in a row, the Big Red lightweight varsity eight has advanced to the semifinal round of the Temple Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta. Cornell will race again tomorrow in the first event following the lunch interval, taking on on ASR Nereus, Netherlands at 9 a.m. EST.
For the third race in a row, Cornell got out to a large lead and then held off a late surge, as it defeated the University of London A crew by two-thirds length in a time of 6:23. The Big Red had a quick and smooth start to the race, eventually pulling away and leading by nearly two lengths midway through the race, before London made a late push to close the gap.
In the Prince Albert Challenge Cup, the lightweight varsity four with coxswain saw its Henley trip come to an end at the hands of Ivy foe Harvard, which defeated the Big Red by two lengths in a time of 7:09.
Day Two ResultsHENLEY-ON-THAMES, Eng. – The Big Red lightweight rowing program picked up a pair of victories this morning at the 2015 Henley Royal Regatta.
The Big Red lightweight varsity eight advanced to the quarterfinals of the Temple Challenge Cup with another spirited effort this morning, as it defeated Trinity College Dublin by two-thirds length in a time of 6:36. Cornell will look for its second consecutive trip to the Henley semifinals when it takes on the University of London A boat tomorrow morning at 4:00 a.m. EST.
In the first round of the Prince Albert Challenge Cup, the Big Red's lightweight varsity four with coxswain defeated Delftsche Studenten Roeivereeniging Laga, Holland, by two-and-three-quarters length in a time of 7:42. Cornell will face a familiar foe in the next round, as it is slated to take on Harvard at 5:40 a.m. EST.
Day One ResultsHENLEY-ON-THAMES, Eng. – In its first day of competition at the 2015 Henley Royal Regatta, the Cornell lightweight varsity eight held off a late surge by the Oxford Brookes B crew to earn the victory in the first round of the Temple Challenge Cup. The Big Red will race again tomorrow, taking on Trinity College Dublin at 10:05 a.m. EST.
The morning proved to be scorching hot, so much so that Regatta Chairman Sir Steve Redgrave gave permission for only the fourth time in the past 39 years for gentlemen to remove their jackets in the Stewards' Enclosure.
The racing between the Big Red and Oxford Brookes proved to be blazing as well, as the crews got out to a quick start with Cornell taking just a slight lead early on. By the halfway point, the Big Red had built a half-length lead, which it eventually stretched into a three-quarter-length lead. Oxford Brookes, an extremely talented crew, would not go without a fight and impressed the crowd with a late surge that came up just short, as the Big Red took the race by roughly three-feet in a time of 6:28.
