ITHACA, N.Y. — After playing the entire 2014 season without a single draw, the women's soccer team kicked off its new campaign on Friday night with a scoreless deadlock against Siena at Berman Field. Cornell dominated territorially, firing 22 shots toward the Saints' goal compared to the opposition's three.

"I came away happy with (our competitiveness), happy with some of the young kids that came on, and happy with the play of (junior Elizabeth Crowell) in the midfield," head coach Patrick Farmer said. "I think there's stuff there to build on, but I'm disappointed in the result. I actually thought we were capable of winning this game."

Cornell (0-0-1), playing its first August home game in program history, shook off the rust in a fairly benign first half. The home side's best crack at goal came about six minutes in, when a defensive turnover in the Siena penalty area gave Crowell an opportunity for a quick shot, but the ball sailed wide of the right post.

Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney did not need to make a single save in recording the shutout behind the staunch back line of senior Charlotte Tate, junior Kailey Joyce, sophomore Whitney Farber and freshman Zoe McCormick. Siena (0-1-2) did threaten in the 49th minute when a through-ball to Cassy Landis racing up the middle was thwarted by Tierney's alert sprint off the line to break up the play around the top of the 18-yard box.

Cornell then hit the woodwork twice in a span of mere seconds with about 31 minutes left in the second half. Off of Crowell's corner kick from the left side, Farber directed a solid header off the post. After the ball bounced around in the box for a few seconds, freshman Carolyn Ruoff took a shot that defelcted away off the crossbar.

The Big Red returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday against Loyola at Berman Field.
