Pullano Goal, Tierney's 7th Shutout Power Women's Soccer

Box Score (PDF)

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — Sophomore forward Tess Pullano scored her first collegiate goal and junior goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney made three saves, all in the second half, to power the women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory Thursday at Seton Hall.

It's the seventh consecutive shutout to start the season for Tierney and Cornell, which remains alongside nationally ranked Rutgers as the only Division I teams in the nation yet to concede a goal. Dating back to last season, the Big Red has a shutout streak of 794 minutes, 5 seconds.

Cornell (5-0-2) established control early, taking the lead in the ninth minute on a beautifully executed give-and-go. A header by senior midfielder Brenna Mockler won possession, then junior midfielder Elizabeth Crowell nodded the ball further up field to Pullano. She brought the ball down and worked a short lateral pass to freshman Carolyn Ruoff toward the middle of the field. Ruoff chipped a pass back to Pullano, who fought off a defender on her heels and slotted a shot past charging goalkeeper Anna MacLean and inside the right post.

Though still with a decided advantage territorially in the first half, the Big Red yielded a few opportunities later in the first half — though nothing that required a save from Tierney. A failed clearance led to a shot from Seton Hall's Sarah Fiorino from 12 yards that bounded just wide. Seton Hall later drew a free kick from about 25 yards straightaway after a foul on a counterattack, but the Big Red wall absorbed the ensuing shot.

Cornell generated a few additional chances at the other end, perhaps none better than one that ended with a quick Crowell shot off a pass from freshman midfielder Jessica Ritchie which was snagged by Seton Hall's second goalkeeper of the evening, Illissa Blackshear.

Seton Hall (0-6-2) came out strong to start the second half, creating some chances in transition. Amanda Gulli had the home side's best chance on a long-range shot that rattled the crossbar in the 55th minute, and Tierney easily corralled Lauren Dao's shot on the rebound. Dao tested Tierney again a couple minutes later on a header from 15 yards, but the Big Red's goalkeeper was equal to it again. She has made 16 saves so far this season.

Cornell is undefeated after seven games for just the second time in the program's 34-year history. Ivy League Player of the Week each of the last two weeks, Tierney moved into a tie for fourth on the program's all-time list with her 13th career clean sheet.

The Big Red returns home for its final non-league tuneup before the start of Ivy League play when it takes on Binghamton at 4 p.m. Sunday at Berman Field.
