Women's Soccer Breaks Shutout Streak Record, Tops Columbia

Box Score (PDF)
Highlights

ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior midfielder Brenna Mockler scored on a rebound of her own penalty kick in the 62nd minute, and junior goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney made four saves to power the women's soccer team to its Ivy League-opening 1-0 victory over Columbia on Friday night at Berman Field. Cornell (7-0-2) is undefeated after nine games for the first time in program history and is the last remaining Division I team in the nation that has yet to concede a goal.

With yet another clean sheet, the Big Red also set a program record for longest shutout streak. Cornell has played 974 minutes, 5 seconds since it last yielded a goal on Oct. 31, 2014 against Princeton. That breaks the previous mark of 939:24, which ran from Oct. 8, 1987 to Sept. 17, 1988.

The penalty kick was awarded after Columbia turned the ball over in its own penalty area, leading to one of its central defenders tackling sophomore forward Meera Dheer from behind to prevent a clear breakaway toward goal. Mockler stepped forward to take the shot from the spot, with Lions goalkeeper Allison Spencer lunging to her right to make the save. But Mockler followed the play and easily converted the rebound, sending Cornell (7-0-2) to its fourth consecutive 1-0 victory. The goal was Mockler's third goal of her career, and all three have been game-winners after the 40th minute.

Columbia (4-4) pressed late and eventually took the lead in attempted shots by game's end. Tierney made four saves for her ninth shutout of the season, which is tied for second-most in a single season in program history. With 18:10 to play, a strong header from the Lions' Madeline Linde was calmly plucked off the line by Tierney reaching over her head. Then with 33 seconds remaining, Natalie Ambrose cracked a shot from 20 yards that Tierney secured.

Cornell started strong, with freshman forward Carolyn Ruoff setting the tone by making a solid bid at goal in the opening minutes that sailed over the crossbar. The Big Red earned six of its seven penalty kicks in the opening 17 minutes — the last of which came perilously close to going straight into goal from junior Elizabeth Crowell's service before a defender cleared it off the line, though the referee ultimately whistled the Big Red for a foul on the play.

The Big Red returns to action at 3 p.m. Sunday with a non-league game at Wagner.
