ITHACA, N.Y. – In its season opening game against Lock Haven this evening, the Big Red field hockey team dropped a heartbreaker to Lock Haven in overtime, as the Lady Eagles Rachel Valentine carried the ball through traffic and used a reverse-stick shot to lift the ball into the upper corner of the net and improve the visitors to 3-0 on the year.
The one-goal decision seems to be a theme whenever the two squads meet. Of the eight all-time meetings, seven have been decided by a single goal, including five overtime contests.
"I thought we carried the play in overtime, but we weren't able to finish our chances," said head coach
Donna Hornibrook. "We had several good opportunities to score and in the end Lock Haven had one good chance and they were able to score."
Lock Haven held the advantage in shots (17-7), and penalty corners (5-2).
In goal, sophomore
Kelly Johnson was outstanding, making six saves to keep the Big Red in the contest.
LHU played a pair of goalies, with Maddie Wagenfeld making the start and collecting two saves before giving way to Paige Stuppy at halftime. Stuppy did not make a save in the final 42:48 of the contest.
Cornell is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 6 as it welcomes Delaware to Marsha Dodson Field at 1 p.m.
