Kelsey Tierney made three saves for another shutout, and the women's soccer defeated Akron on Sunday afternoon, 2-0, to clinch the Alumni Classic title at St. Bonaventure's Marra Athletic Complex. With the victory, Cornell (3-0-1) is off its best start since 2005, and this marks the first time in the program's 35-year history the Big Red hasn't conceded a goal in the first four games of a season.
Ruoff's first collegiate goal proved to be the winner, coming in the 25th minute with assists credited to sophomore forward
Tess Pullano and sophomore defender
Whitney Farber. Crowell joined sophomore forward
Paige DeLoach as the only players on the squad with two goals this season when she slotted home an unassisted insurance tally in the 68th minute. The Big Red held a 12-6 lead in shots, which means the squad has at least doubled its opponents in attempted shots in every game to date this season. Akron (3-1-1) entered the game undefeated.
Tierney's three saves were a season high, with the Big Red's strong possession game and back line keeping opponents to a total of just seven shots on frame through the first four games. The shutout was the 10th of Tierney's career, which moves her up to a tie for fifth on the program's career list for clean sheets with Marybeth Bell (1995-96).
With the win, Cornell won the Alumni Classic title with a 2-0 record and six points. Akron and St. Bonaventure finished 1-1 with three points, and Cleveland State was 0-2. Ruoff, Crowell, Tierney and senior defender
Charlotte Tate were all named to all-tournament team.
