ITHACA, N.Y. -- For the second day in a row, the bottom of Cornell's lineup came up big and the Big Red extended its Ivy League win streak to 14 years with a 30-13 victory over Brown on Saturday afternoon at the Friedman Wrestling Center. The Big Red improved to 3-3 (2-0 Ivy), while the Bears fell to 0-4 (0-1 Ivy).
Cornell won its 70th straight against Ivy League opponents, but it wasn't a walk in the park. A Cornell forfeit at 133, a major decision win by Justin Staudenmayer of Brown at 157 and a tight 11-7 victory by Jon Viruet at 165 gave the Bears a 13-10 win after six matches. Just like on Friday night against Harvard, Cornell took control over the next three matches, all decided by bonue points, and earned a forfeit win at heavyweight for the final margin.
For the second straight day, junior
Gabe Dean picked up six big team points with a pin, squaring Austin Pfarr's shoulders to the mat 2:35 into the first period. That came right after seventh-ranked
Brian Realbuto fell just short of a tech fall win over Andrew LaBrie at 174 (19-5) and before
Owen Scott put the match away with an 8-0 shutout of Augustus Marker at 197.
Freshmen
Dalton Macri and Joey Galasson won their second straight Ivy bouts to open their career, with Galasso holding on for a 4-3 win over Steven Galiardo at 149. Macri dominated much of the way en route to an 18-6 major decision victory over Michael Russo at 125.
Cornell remains home as it welcomes No. 8 Lehigh to Ithaca on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Friedman Wrestling Center. The Big Red has won three straight contests against the Mountain Hawks, including last season's 21-9 victory in Bethlehem, Pa.
