Men's Soccer Set Back By Columbia In Season Finale

Box Score (PDF)

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Columbia jumped out to an early lead in the fifth minute of the game and then kept its foot on the pedal in the second half to come away with a 4-0 victory over the men's soccer team in the season finale at the Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Columbia (13-3-1, 5-1-1 Ivy League) scored just 4:39 into the game when Amit Shumowitz sent in a cross from the right flank that Arthur Bosua was able to hit to the right post and over the line for his first of three goals in the game.

The Lions kept the pressure on for the remainder of the first half and earned eight corner kicks and totaled six shots –and totaled 16 to Cornell's three in the game - but the Big Red defense and freshman goalkeeper Ryan Shellow were able to keep it a one goal game. Cornell (1-14-2, 0-7-0 Ivy League) took two shots in the first half, forcing Dylan Castanheira to make one save when senior Jonathan Cullom tested the keeper from 35 yards out.

The Lions – who earned a share of the Ancient Eight title with the victory - broke through again just over 10 minutes into the second half when Bosua headed home his second goal of the game and then John Denis made it 3-0 less than 45 seconds later when he lofted a shot from the top of the box into the far right corner of the goal. Bosua earned a hat trick in the 67th minute when Francisco Agrest fed a ball across the goal mouth that he was able to poke over the line for the 4-0 lead.

Shellow made seven saves in the game – including four in the second half – while Castanheira finished with one, and the Lions took 16 shots.

Though Columbia earns part of the title, Dartmouth will earn the conference bid to the NCAA College Cup by way of a victory over the Lions earlier this season.
