Cornell Wrestling Sets Up Saturday Night Ivy Title Match With Win At Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Freshman Joey Galasso picked up a signature win in front of his hometown fans and the Cornel lwrestling team set up a Saturday evening Ivy title match with Princeton by running through Penn 21-9 on Saturday afternoon at the Palestra. Cornell evened its record at 5-5 (4-0 Ivy), while Penn slipped to 5-4 (2-2 Ivy).

All three of Penn's nationally ranked wrestlers were defeated, with Galasso's victory over No. 12 C.J. Cobb at 149 pounds coming as the lone upset. He rode a first period takedown to the victory that sets him up for seeding at the upcoming EIWA championship in front of a loud, friendly gymn that was cheering the local native on. He took a 3-2 lead into the the final seconds of the third and was able to defend a late shot and go behind to clinch the 5-2 victory.

Top-ranked Gabe Dean had yet another close match with rival and 15th-ranked Lorenzo Thomas at 184, but a takedown in sudden victory handed him the 7-5 triumph. Dean led 4-2 after one with a pair of takedowns, but Thomas was able to earn a pair of nearfall swipes to tie it up. The two each earned escapes and neither was able to put together an effective shot over the final three minutes before Dean came out the back of a scramble in sudden victory to pick up his 108th career victory.

Cornell had the first takedown in the eight of the 10 matches and had a dominnant 22-5 edge in takedowns on the night. While all seven Big Red wins came by decision (as well as all three of Penn's wins), five were a takedown away from a major decision.

Freshman heavyweight Jeramy Sweany, feshman 125-pounder Dalton Macri, senior 133-pounder Nahshon Garrett and senior 165-pounder Duke Pickett all won decisive decisions over Quaker wrestlers, all falling one late takedown or turn away from picking up bonus points. Junior Brian Realbuto avenged one of his three losses from the Southern Scuffle wit ha workmanlike 8-2 decision over 15th-ranked Casey Kent.

The Big Red will go for its 14th consecutive Ivy League title and its 73rd straight Ivy dual meet win when it meets Princeton at 7 p.m. in Dillon Gymnasium i na match broadcast on the Ivy League Digital Network.
