Ithaca, N.Y. – In their final tune up before the Northeast Regional Championships the women's polo team edged out a 17-15 win over the Central New York Polo Club on Friday night.
CNY came out firing to build a 7-0 lead over the Big Red. It was one of the few times this season Cornell committed a sluggish start. Fortunately,
Elena Wicker,
Emma Eldredge, and
Anna Winslow responded with four goals to end the first chukker down 7-4.
The second chukker proved to be a defensive struggle for the Big Red as CNY added to their lead to go into the half ahead 9-5.
The Cornell women settled down at the half coming out composed and ready for the third. The Big Red turned the tide on CNY by outscoring them 6-1 in the third to take an 11-10 lead into the fourth.
CNY was not done offensively and the teams traded goals until the tie reached 13. Cornell committed a penalty and CNY drilled a two-point penalty shot to take a 15-13 lead with a couple minutes remaining. The Big Red responded by tying the score back up at 15. Cornell pulled into the lead on a penalty shot with under a minute to play and then added a last second goal to secure the win at 17-15. In total,
Anna Winslow tallied six goals, Wicker added four, and Eldredge scored three. Two penalty goals and 2 pony goals also contributed to the Big Red's total.
Cornell is back at it next weekend when they compete in the USPA Northeast Regional Championships at home.
