Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Columbia

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell used the big bats to extend its win streak to three games, but Columbia returned the favor in the nightcap as the team split an Ivy League doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field. The Big Red moved to 7-21 (2-8 Ivy) with the split, while the Lions exited Saturday with a 10-25 mark (3-7 Ivy).

The split kept Columbia two games out of first place in the Ivy League South Division, while Cornell is three back with 10 to play.

Junior Jessica Bigbie continued her hot hitting with a 4-for-8 day that included a double and home run, while Tori Togashi was 3-for-6 with a homer.

Game One
A three-run first inning in game one put the Big Red ahead for good and senior Meg Parker did the rest in the circle, hurling a complete game five-hitter while striking out six and surrendering just one earned run in improving to 4-8.

The Big Red hit three homers in the contest, as Jessica Bigbie, Tori Togashi and Olivia May each slammed their second home runs of the year. Bigbie was 3-for-4 with a double, a homer, a pair of runs scored and two RBI to lead the offense, while Togashi also had a pair of hits. The Big Red never trailed after Parker surrendered a solo homer in the first to Maddie Gott, and after the Lions got within 3-2, the Big Red added three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth for some insurance.

Togashi and Bigbie each homered in the fourth, with Bigbie's shot a two-run bomb, and May plated two in the sixth with her home run.

Parker settled down after a shaky first two innings, stranding three base runners over the final five innings and allowing just a two-out double in the seventh after giving up four hits and her only two runs in the first two innings. Parker surrendered nine of the game's final 10 batters.

Game Two
The Lions pounded out 12 hits and six that went for extra bases, including three homers, to snap Cornell's win streak at three. Kerry Cook had a huge afternoon, as the Columbia leadoff hitter went 4-for-5 with a home run, six RBI and two runs scored in the 11-4 final.

Columbia scored two in the first and second to hop out to a 4-0 lead, and thought the Big Red clawed back within 4-3 after three and 6-4 after five, the Lions put up crooked numbers in their final two at bats to run away with the victory.

Tessa Kroll earned the win by holding Cornell at bay, stranding six runners and generally staying out of major trouble despite allowing nine hits in the complete game win.

Leanne Iannucci was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI to go along with a walk. Meg Parker had two hits, including a double, and scored twice and Olivia May was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Maddie Gott, who homered in game one, was 3-for-4 two runs scored in the nightcap.
