ITHACA, N.Y. – New Hampshire used a 2-0 win over the men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Berman Field to clinch the 2016 CU Inaria Classic title.

The Wildcats (6-1-0) scored the only goal they would need when Cornell was called for a penalty inside the box in the 29th minute. Chris Wingate stepped up to the spot and sent the ball low and to the left corner, the opposite direction of freshman goalkeeper Ryan Shellow's dive, to put the Wildcats up, 1-0.

Until that point, the Big Red had been controlling the flow of the game, firing four shots at the New Hampshire net within the first 20 minutes. Senior Duff Bedrosian created a great chance for himself in the 20th minute when he drove into the box and around the defender from the right side. Bedrosian fired his shot towards the far post but Andrew Pesci was able to get a shoelace on it and deflected it out for a corner.

Despite entering the second half down, 1-0, Cornell continued to press for an equalizer, despite some tired legs.

"This is a resilient group. They have it in here [the heart]. There's no doubt about it that they're leaving everything on the field which is all you can expect," said head coach John Smith.

Cornell (0-5-2) was playing its third game in five days – with the previous two against Binghamton and Saint Francis being stretched to double overtime – but Smith was proud of the effort the team put forth against the Wildcats despite the arduous schedule.

The Cornell defense did its best to withstand some Wildcat pressure early on in the second half when it didn't allow the visitors to convert on four corner kicks in the span of two minutes.

"For me it's trying to convince the guys that they have more in the tank and they gave all they had, really. I couldn't have asked for more," Smith said. "What you saw was everything that the team had."

New Hampshire got their second goal of the game in the 78th minute when Jack Dickson was fed on the wing and was able to drive into the box and shoot the ball far post, past Shellow.

Shellow finished with five saves and his counterpart, Pesci, had two. New Hampshire outshot the Big Red, 12-8.

Cornell will welcome Syracuse to Berman Field on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a non-league matchup before heading to Virginia on Sept. 27.
