Women's Squash Makes Case To Move Up With Sunday Split

NEW YORK — The women's squash team has made a case to move up the national rankings by toppling seventh-ranked Columbia, 6-3, on Sunday at SL Green StreetSquash. The Big Red later lost to sixth-ranked Stanford, 7-2.

Cornell (6-3, 2-1 Ivy League) improved to 6-1 all-time against Columbia, backing up a victory in the Howe Cup seventh-place match last year to set itself up to again leapfrog the Lions in the College Squash Association national rankings this week. Five of the matches against Columbia went to five sets, with Cornell emerging victorious in four of them

Junior Margaux Losty swept her match at No. 3, then sophomore Hannah Scherl battled back to win in five sets at No. 9 to give Cornell a 2-1 lead over Columbia following the first rotation. Junior Charlotte Knaggs won in three at No. 8 and senior co-captain Rachel Scherman outlasted her opponent at No. 2 send Cornell into the final rotation with a 4-2 lead. Junior Emma Uible (No. 4) and freshman Lucy Martin (No. 7) then won in five in the final rotation to clinch the match for the Big Red.

After a quick turnaround to the day's second match, the Big Red never got on track against the Cardinal. Losty won her second match of the day at No. 3, then junior Michèle Garceau battled back to win in five at No. 1.

"There were some close matches. I'm very happy with how hard we fought," said David Palmer, the first-year James Broadhead '57 Head Coach of Squash. "I think we could turn this result around if we play Stanford again at nationals."

Cornell returns to action next weekend with an Ivy League trip to Dartmouth (noon Saturday) and Harvard (noon Sunday).
