Men's Squash Looks For Momentum Heading Into Nationals

ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's squash team will look to break a three-match losing streak and make one final push a spot in the 'A' Division of the College Squash Associational national championships when it takes on Princeton and Penn this weekend. The match against the Tigers at 5:30 p.m. Friday will serve as Senior Day at Belkin International Squash Courts before the regular season season concludes with a noon Sunday match at Penn.

Cornell (6-8, 1-4 Ivy League) was last ranked 11th by the College Squash Association, though new rankings are expected to be released prior to Friday's match against Princeton. The Big Red was topped by last weekend at Dartmouth, 8-1, and top-ranked Harvard, 9-0. Junior Andy Muran accounted for Cornell's lone point on the weekend, winning his match at the No. 2 position against the Big Green. He now has seven victories on the year, which is tied for the team lead with senior Augie Jones. Senior Harry Freeman and sophomore Perry Hanson also have six wins apiece from the top third, and sophomore Alex Jung is 6-5 from the lower half.

Princeton (3-8, 1-4), most recently ranked 10th, snapped a seven-match losing streak by defeating Brown, 8-1, last Sunday. The Tigers then suffered a 6-3 loss to fifth-ranked Drexel on Wednesday. Penn (7-5, 3-2) was ranked sixth last week and picked up an 8-1 win last Saturday at Brown, but then suffered a 7-2 upset loss to No. 9 Yale on Sunday. Hayes Murphy is 10-2 from the No. 3 position and Jonathan Zeitels is 6-0 from the Nos. 8 and 9 spots.

At this weekend exactly one year ago, the Big Red swept four matches — including exciting 5-4 wins against Penn and Princeton. Freeman clinched the match against the Tigers with a five-set victory from the No. 1 position, then Cornell pulled off a huge upset of Penn two days later. The Quakers were ranked third in the country at the time, and the Big Red was tabbed 12th. Cornell is now 47-5 all-time against Princeton and 21-39 vs. Penn.

Friday's match is free to attend and open to the public. It will serve as the last home match for the team's seniors, Freeman, Jones and Kevin Flannery.
