Polo Readies For Nationals With Final Home Contests

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell polo teams will have a final tuneup for the USPA National Championships when the women welcome Garrison Forest on Friday, March 17 and the men face Hemlock Hill on Saturday, March 18. Both matches will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Oxley Equestrian Center.

The men bring a 14-3 record into its contest, including 10-3 at home. Head coach David Eldredge has a 453-181-8 (.712) record in his 32 years on the sidelines for the men, including 30 straight appearances in the finals of the Northeast Regionals and 14 straight trips to nationals and the 2005 USPA collegiate national title. Cornell's runner-up effort in the regionals was good enough to garner an at-large bid to the nationals, where it will have an opportunity to win the program's 12th national title.

The women are 8-11, though eight of the 11 losses have come to regional rival Connecticut and national powers Virginia and Texas A&M. Despite a record under .500, its spot in the regional finals and strength of schedule allowed the Big Red to earn an at-large bid to the championships, its ninth straight appearance at USPA nationals.

The Big Red women won their second straight and 15th national title in program history last year. Cornell has advanced to the national title game each of the last six seasons with titles in 2011, 2015 and 2016. Eldredge enters the weekend sporting a 500-142-17 (.772) record. All told, he has a 953-323-25 (.742) mark as a collegiate head coach.
