ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's soccer team conceded two goals in the first half, then Binghamton held on for a 2-0 victory on Sunday at Berman Field.
After going scoreless in its last four games against Cornell (1-3), Binghamton (5-1-2) reversed those fortunes early on Sunday. A ball was served from the right side past the far post, where Genna Michitti took a swing at it. While the shot was blocked, it landed right in the path of leading scorer Kayla Saager. She took her time and space 15 yards from straight in front of the goal, finishing a shot under the crossbar.
The Big Red's best chance of the opening half came at the 11-minute mark. Senior forward
Paige DeLoach got free near the end line on the right side, then found junior midfielder
Zoe McCormick toward the top of the 18-yard box. She took a touch and took a shot that was slotted toward the inside of the far post, only to have it swatted wide by Binghamton goalkeeper Katy Hatziyianis.
The Bearcats doubled their lead 10 minutes later. Carly Bennett took a corner kick from the right side that found Sam O'Malley out from the far post. She settled the ball and sent it back toward the middle, where Ryan Reilly was open to convert from short range.
The teams played more evenly in the second half, with Cornell nearly breaking through in the 74th minute. Junior midfielder
Carolyn Ruoff cranked a shot from 25 yards that took the slightest of touches off Hatziyianis' hands before clattering off the crossbar.
In its final tune-up before the start of Ivy league play, the Big Red will next play Maine at 1 p.m. Saturday.
