PHILADELPHIA – Despite seven saves from sophomore goalie
Maddie Henry, the Big Red field hockey team fell to Penn, 2-0, this afternoon at Ellen Vagelos Field in Philadelphia. Alexa Schneck's goal in the 11th minute was not only the game-winner, but it was the first goal allowed by Henry in the 2017 season and ended her shutout streak at 291:09, the second longest streak in school history.
Penn (3-4, 1-0 Ivy) controlled the run of play and outshot the Big Red, 13-7, including 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Quakers also earned six penalty corners, including five in the second half when the home team tacked on a penalty corner goal from Rachel Mirkin in the 55th minute to seal the victory.
Cornell (5-2, 1-0 Ivy) earned just three penalty corners in the game and managed just two shots on goal, both of which were turned away by Penn goalie Liz Mata.
The Big Red is back in action next weekend when it welcomes Columbia (Sept. 30) and Lock Haven (Oct. 1) to Dodson Field. Cornell had a three-game winning streak against the Lions snapped last season, but still holds the significant 17-4 lead in the all-time series. Cornell defeated the Lady Eagles a season ago to cut LHU's lead in the series to 5-4. The meetings with the Lady Eagles have proven to be exciting over the years with seven of the last eight games being decided by a single goal, including five in overtime.
