ITHACA, N.Y. – The win streak continues on for the men's soccer team as they knocked off regional rival Binghamton, 3-2, at Berman Field on Tuesday night. The team's third win in a row was a unique one, as two of Cornell's goals were own goals.
"We did well scoring three goals and creating a number of chances," said head coach John Smith. "The good thing was that we were creating chances and we created them in both halves and whenever you're doing that, good things tend to happen."
The Big Red (4-3-1) got things going in the 21st minute as a shot by Eric Nuss hit the far post and then ricochet off of a Binghamton player's head before going into the net.
The Bearcats (3-5-1) managed to level things early in the second half, 1-1, as Haris Brkovic knocked in a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that found itself tucked into the back-right corner of the net.
However, Cornell was quick to respond, taking the lead once again, 2-1, less than a minute later. The score was the second own goal of the night as a free kick by Kepler Despinos pinged around the mouth of the net before eventually hitting a Binghamton player in the head and crossing over the goal line.
Tyler Bagley scored the last goal of the night for the squad in the 63rd minute after Caleb McAuslan sent a perfect ball from just outside of the circle. Bagley received the ball and won the one-on-one battle with the keeper to score his first-career goal and put the team up 3-1.
Binghamton did manage to score late in game in the 87th minute as Brkovic delivered once again for the Bearcats, but the damage was done as Cornell walked away with the 3-2 decision.
Goalkeeper Mitchell Meyer came through for the team with four saves on the night while Binghamton's Chris Shutler had two.
The team returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 30, as they travel to Penn for its Ivy League opener.
