ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell field hockey team picked up its second 1-0 win in 48 hours, using a second half penalty corner goal to hold off Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. The Big Red improved to 2-0, while the Bison slipped to 1-3.
After a first period that was territorially controlled by the visitors, Cornell broke through 10 minutes after halftime when
Kirsten Pienaar's strike took a bounce over
Gabby DePetro's stick and bounded into the goal on a penalty corner. Kate Carlson and
Isabel Josephs were credited with assists on what would prove to be the game winner.
Big Red sophomore goalkeeper
Maddie Henry came in after the break and made two saves to pick up the win, improving to 5-0 in her career. Starter
Kelly Johnson wasn't tested in the first half despite pressure, as the Big Red held a 6-2 edge in shots over the first 35 minutes and 10-8 for the game. It also finished ahead of the Bison in penalty corners, 6-4.
Despite a constant threat of rain, a nice crowd took in Make-A-Wish day, as the two teams used the matchup as a fundraiser for the organization that has helped thousands of children, including Cornell's own
Maddy Conklin. After the contest, the two teams conducted a clinic together.
Cornell will visit the University of Vermont next weekend, playing the host Catamounts on Saturday, Sept. 9, then meeting Maine on Sunday, Sept. 10. Both games will start at 1 p.m.
