Polo Teams Sweep Home Weekend, Keep Win Streaks Intact

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's and women's polo teams extended win streaks with weekend victories at Oxley Equestrian Center. The women moved to nine straight wins with Friday night's 18-8 victory over Garrison Forest, while the men took a seventh consecutive victory thanks to a 15-8 decision over Miami (Fla.) on Saturday,

Anna Ullmann, Hannah Noyes, and Shariah Harris opened the match with consecutive two-pointers by Harris and Noyes and a poke-in by Ullmann before Garrison Forest got on the board. Cornell led 5-2 after the first chukker and never looked back. The home team continued to build its lead in the second and went into the half up 12-5. Staying consistent in the third, Cornell extended its lead to 17-6 entering the final chukker. Cornell cruised to the victory, improving to 11-2 in the process. Harris led all scorers with nine goals, while Noyes added seven.

Dan Shaw, Ryan Saul and Lorenzo Masias moved to 9-2 on the season. The first half turned into a defensive battle with the Big Red holding a 2-0 lead after the first chukker. The low-scoring affair continued as Cornell went into the half ahead 5-1. The third saw more of the same, and again Cornell added to its small lead to move to the fourth ahead 9-3. The fourth saw the game finally open up with nearly as many goals scored in the chukker as in the rest of the game combined. Cornell came out on top 6-5 for the chukker and 15-8 for the match. Shaw tallied six goals, Masias had five and three penalty goals were added in.

The men return to action on Friday, Feb. 2 when Kentucky visits Oxley for a 7:30 p.m. start. The women are off until Sunday, Feb. 11 when they visit Connecticut for a 1 p.m. meeting in Storrs, Conn.
